The Future of Ground Operations Is Here: Pentastar Launches Autonomous Wingwalking Robots

Innovation in aviation isn’t only happening in the sky. At Pentastar, the future is taking shape all around us.
Pentastar has become the first aviation company to deploy autonomous wingwalking robots from Airtrek Robotics, introducing brand new technology designed to work alongside ground crews during aircraft towing operations.

The launch marks a monumental step forward for ground operations and reflects Pentastar’s longstanding commitment to identifying new ways to enhance safety, efficiency and the customer experience.
“From the beginning, we saw the potential for this technology and what it could mean for our operations,” said Ben Hammond, Pentastar Vice President of FBO Services. “Being first is exciting, but what matters most is finding meaningful ways to use innovation to support our team, strengthen safety and continue delivering the level of service our customers have come to expect.”
Traditionally, moving an aircraft from a hangar requires three team members, including two wingwalkers who monitor clearance around the aircraft. Airtrek’s autonomous robots are designed to perform the wingwalking function alongside Pentastar’s ground operations team, helping crews conduct aircraft movements safely and reliably.
For Pentastar, the technology creates new opportunities to support its around-the-clock operation while allowing team members to remain focused on customers.
“We’re open 24/7, and this technology expands what we’re able to do, especially with early-morning departures and late-night arrivals,” said Emmy Schoening, Pentastar Quality Assurance Trainer. “We’re also looking closely at the processes, procedures and safety considerations that come with introducing something completely new to the ramp.”
That thoughtful approach has been central to the collaboration between Pentastar and Airtrek. The technology is being introduced into real-world operations with Pentastar team members helping test and refine procedures around its use.

For Airtrek Robotics Co-Founder and CEO Chris Lee, Pentastar’s willingness to embrace the technology early made the company more than its first customer.
“Pentastar was our first believer,” Lee said. “They saw the value in what we built and gave us the opportunity to put it into real-world operations. That means a lot to our team.”
The significance extends beyond Pentastar’s own operation. For Oakland County International Airport (OCIA), seeing autonomous robotics become part of day-to-day aviation activity represents a glimpse into the industry’s future.
“It’s incredibly exciting to witness robots becoming part of day-to-day operations here at our airport,” said Cheryl Bush, Director of Aviation for Oakland County’s three airports. “We’re proud that Pentastar is a launch customer for this technology and thrilled to see this kind of innovation happening right here at OCIA.”
